Pneumatic Hammers

Pneumatic hammers are otherwise known as jackhammers. It is a power tool that combines a hammer and a chisel. While framing and planishing tools do more delicate work, the pneumatic hammer clears away the heavy stuff. Hand-held pneumatic hammers are typically powered by compressed air, but some used electric motors. Larger pneumatic hammers used on construction machinery are usually hydraulically powered. They are usually used to break-up rock, pavement, and concrete. A pneumatic hammer operates by driving an internal hammer up and down. The hammer is first driven down to strike the back of the bit and then back up to return the hammer to the original position to repeat the cycle. The bit usually recovers from the stroke by means of a spring. The effectiveness of the jackhammer is dependent on how much force is applied to the tool.

A full-sized portable jackhammer is impractical for use against walls and steep slopes, except for a very strong man, as the user would have to both support the weight of the tool, and push the tool back against the work after each blow. A technique developed by experienced workmen is a two-man team to overcome this obstacle of gravity: one man operates the hammer and the second assists by holding the hammer either on his shoulders or cradled in his arms. Both use their combined weight to push the bit into the workface. This method is commonly referred to as horizontal jackhammering. Another method is overhead jackhammering, requiring strength conditioning and endurance to hold a smaller jackhammer, called a rivet buster, over one’s head.

The purpose of pneumatic hammers is more on heavy duty work, other hammers are designed for more specific tasks. The framing hammer is made for just about any type of framing work, from framing a house, or a room addition to a standing structure, or even a doghouse, it makes the process of framing quicker and more secure. Planishing hammers on the other hand are usually neck hammers and ball-pein hammers. (These and other hammer types are available at Stiletto Tools.)

In heavy duty work that involves breaking up rock and other hard surfaces, pneumatic hammers are the choice. If you’re looking to buy one, check out the B67C Pneumatic Breaker, it weighs around 30kgs with an over all length of 615mm, it operates with an air power of 0.63MPa. The paving breaker model B67C is tools with compressed air as its power. The compressed air is distributed alternatively through the distributing valve into either end of the cylinder assembly so that the pneumatic hammer inside is made to carry on a reciprocal motion which impacts the shank of the steel chisel by the tappet drives the chisel into the concrete foundation and makes them split into huge pieces.
